so the husband has sent me a few pictures from his jaunt in the mother country...they probably aren't in order...but just a little taste of russia.
i believe these pictures are from his trip to yaroslavl
this is my favorite picture
in yaroslavl they went to a dacha (a summer home) and have a very fun culture experience. one night they sat around the campfire and sang russian songs while the husband played the guitar...then they learned how to paint eggs...this was his description of it
"Those eggs have a lotof meaning to the Russian people. So you start out by cleaning your
egg, then you go to a corner of the house where you think of your
greatest desire and pray for it. When you are done, you breathe your
desire into egg by blowing on it and that starts the inception of the
birth. Then you have these tiny tools that has a small hole in one
side and on the other side you scrape wax into it. You have candles
that heat and melt the wax in. You constantly have to put it in the
flame to keep the wax liquid. So with the small hole, you draw
symbols on the egg. Each symbol means something different. She
explained all the different symbols and how you can mix them to make
powerful signs. So you make some symbols on the egg with the wax and
then drop them into dye (a bit stronger than what we use for easter
eggs) and it colors it a deep color. So everywhere on the egg that
did not have wax on it turns that specific color. Then you slowly
take the egg close to the flame and melt off the existing wax. This
takes some serious time because you can't burn the egg, but you have
to melt the wax off. Then when the wax is gone, you draw more designs
on it with wax to preserve that color. Then you dump it in a
different color of dye. And the entire egg (except where you put wax
on again) turns to that color. So you can make it have multiple
colors. So much more fun than just painting eggs. "

this picture cracks me up..this was his email to me "My first (and hopefully last) Russian haircut. She asked if I wanted
it blow-dried and I said yes thinking that she meant blow-dry the hair
off my neck. Nope, she did my hair and brushed it all the way back.
It is so fluffy now. But it is not too bad. "
