a few saturday’s ago several of the museums opened up for free to college students…so we took full advantage…we are compling a very good list of places to take people if they come visit
first stop was the art museum
second was the franklin institute
and third (our favorite of all) eastern state penitentiary
east state is considered the world's first true penitentiary. it's design came from the idea to reform rather than punish. in the 1800's they developed the separate system which is now known as solitary confinement. one of the most famous prisoners to be held there was Al Capone. In 1972 the prison was closed and abandoned. nothing has been done to the prison since it was abandoned. so when you tour the prison you are touring what was actually left. it had a very eerie feeling even in the middle of the day. it was the type of place you would see in a horror film. we loved it.
